BULIMBA SKIN CANCER CLINIC
Skin Cancer Checks in Bulimba
Queensland has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and our UV is high year-round. Regular skin checks are one of the most worthwhile things you can do for your long-term health — most skin cancers are very treatable when found early.
The doctors at Oxford Street Medical Centre in Bulimba have a strong interest in skin cancer medicine and provide skin checks, biopsies and minor skin cancer procedures on site. And because we're your local general practice, the doctor who checks your skin can also look after your follow-up care — you're not starting from scratch somewhere new each time.
When should you get a skin check?
Book an appointment if you’ve noticed:
• A mole or spot that has changed in size, colour, shape or texture
• A new spot that looks different from the others
• A sore or lesion that bleeds, crusts or doesn’t heal
Even without any obvious changes, regular full body skin checks matter — especially if you’re fair-skinned, spend a lot of time outdoors, or have a personal or family history of skin cancer. Your doctor can advise how often you should be checked.
Our skin cancer services
• Full body skin cancer checks
• Assessment of moles, spots and lesions using a dermatoscope
• Monitoring of suspicious or changing spots
• Skin biopsies
• Excisions and other minor skin cancer procedures
• Advice on sun protection and checking your own skin
• Referral to a specialist when needed
What to expect at your skin check
Plenty of people put off skin checks because they feel a bit awkward about them. Our doctors keep the examination thorough but respectful, and you can choose a male or female doctor when you book.
During a full skin check, your doctor will examine your skin from head to toe using a dermatoscope — a handheld magnifier that shows what’s happening beneath the surface of a spot and helps pick up changes the naked eye can miss. If anything needs a closer look, your doctor will talk you through the options, which may include monitoring, a biopsy or removal.

Who does your skin check
Three of our doctors do skin checks and skin procedures. Dr Paul Bryan completed his skin cancer training with the Skin Cancer College Australasia and has more than ten years in skin cancer medicine. Dr Colin McTari has substantial experience in skin cancer medicine and skin surgery over more than seventeen years in practice. Dr Patricia Porras Rodriguez does skin checks and skin procedures, and also consults in Spanish. You can choose your doctor when you book.
How long does a skin check take?
Most skin checks take 15 to 30 minutes. Choose the skin check appointment type when you book and the right amount of time is set aside.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can book a skin check directly, no referral needed.
How often should I have a skin check?
It depends on your skin type, your sun exposure and whether you or your family have had skin cancer before. Your doctor will tell you what is right for you.
What happens if the doctor finds something?
Your doctor will talk you through it at the appointment. That usually means keeping an eye on the spot, taking a biopsy, or removing it, and most of that can be done here at the practice.
How should I prepare?
Bring your Medicare card, skip nail polish and heavy makeup on the day, and write down any spots you are worried about so nothing gets forgotten.
