Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTOP)

Oxford Street Medical Centre provides confidential support for patients seeking information about Medical Termination of Pregnancy, also known as MTOP or medical abortion.

We understand this can be a sensitive and personal decision. Our doctors provide respectful care, clear information and appropriate follow-up so you can make an informed decision.

Termination of pregnancy is legal in Queensland, and you do not need a referral to see us.

What is MTOP?

Medical Termination of Pregnancy is a non-surgical option used to end an early pregnancy with prescribed medication.

In Australia, medical termination is generally available for pregnancies up to 9 weeks, or 63 days, gestation. Suitability depends on your individual medical history, pregnancy dates and clinical assessment by the doctor.

MTOP involves at least two appointments — an initial consultation, and a follow-up visit one to two weeks later to confirm the treatment is complete.

What to expect

Your first appointment may include:

  • A confidential consultation with the doctor

  • Confirmation of your pregnancy dates

  • Discussion of your medical history and current medications

  • Referral for ultrasound or blood tests if required

  • Explanation of the MTOP process, risks, side effects and follow-up care

  • Discussion of contraception options if you would like this

  • Referral to another service if MTOP is not suitable for you

The doctor will explain each step clearly and answer your questions before any decision is made. You are welcome to bring a support person with you.

Is MTOP right for me?

MTOP may be suitable for some patients in early pregnancy, but it is not appropriate for everyone.

The doctor will assess factors such as:

  • How far along the pregnancy is

  • Whether the pregnancy is confirmed by ultrasound to be in the right location (ruling out ectopic pregnancy)

  • Your general health and medical history

  • Current medications

  • Access to support and emergency care if needed

  • Any symptoms such as severe pain or heavy bleeding

If MTOP is not suitable, we can discuss referral options for further care.

Confidential and non-judgemental care

Your privacy is important. Our team provides discreet, respectful and confidential care at all times.
