MEN'S HEALTH
Men's Health in Bulimba
Most men put off seeing a doctor until something's clearly wrong. The problem is that many of the conditions that hit men hardest, like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, bowel cancer, prostate problems and depression, are much easier to deal with when they're picked up early.
Dr Paul Bryan and Dr Bruce Maybloom both have a particular interest in men's health and see men of all ages at Oxford Street Medical Centre Bulimba. Our female GPs also look after men's health if you'd prefer to see one of them.
Health checks
A regular check-up is the simplest thing you can do for your long-term health. Depending on your age and history, your GP may look at:
Blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar
Your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes
Weight, waist measurement, diet, alcohol and exercise
Bowel cancer screening (the free home test kit starts at 45)
Vaccinations, including flu, shingles and whooping cough boosters
Sleep, snoring and energy levels
If you're aged 45 to 49 and have a risk factor for a chronic condition, such as a family history, being overweight, smoking or high blood pressure, Medicare supports a dedicated 45 to 49 year health assessment with your GP. There's also a health assessment for people aged 75 and over. We offer both. Ask reception to book a longer appointment for a health assessment.
Prostate health
Prostate problems become more common with age. Needing to go more often, getting up at night, a weak stream or trouble starting are all worth getting checked. Most of the time the cause is benign enlargement, which can be treated, but it's important to rule out anything more serious.
PSA testing for prostate cancer isn't a simple yes or no. It has benefits and downsides, and whether it's right for you depends on your age, family history and what matters to you. Testing is generally discussed with men aged 50 to 69, or earlier if you have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer. Our GPs will talk it through properly so you can make an informed decision, rather than just ticking a box on a pathology form.
Erectile dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction is common and very treatable, and it's often the first sign of something else going on, such as heart disease, diabetes, low testosterone, stress or a medication side effect. That's why it's worth seeing your GP rather than buying something online. We'll check for underlying causes and talk through the treatment options.
Sexual health
Confidential STI testing and treatment, HPV vaccination and advice, without judgement. Many infections have no symptoms, so if you've had a new partner or are starting a new relationship, a check is a sensible idea. Testing is usually just a urine sample or a swab, plus a blood test if needed.
Testosterone and energy
Low energy, low mood, loss of muscle, weight gain and low libido can have many causes, and low testosterone is only one of them. Thyroid problems, sleep apnoea, depression, diabetes and medications can all look similar. Your GP can assess your symptoms, arrange the right blood tests and work out what's actually going on, with specialist input where it's needed.
Mental health
Men are less likely to ask for help with stress, anxiety, low mood or drinking, and more likely to leave it until it's affecting work, relationships or sleep. You don't need to be in crisis to talk to a GP. We can put together a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which gives you Medicare-supported sessions with a psychologist, and we have clinical psychologists onsite.
If you need to talk to someone right now, Lifeline is available 24 hours on 13 11 14, and MensLine Australia on 1300 78 99 78.
Fertility and family planning
Pre-conception health checks, semen analysis and fertility investigations for couples who've been trying without success, and advice and referral if you're considering a vasectomy.
Sport, work and injuries
Sports and musculoskeletal injuries, back and joint pain, and return-to-work assessments. We also provide pre-employment medicals, commercial driver medicals, rail medicals and CASA aviation medicals for pilots and air traffic controllers with Dr Bruce Maybloom.
Book an appointment
Book with Dr Bryan or Dr Maybloom, or any of our GPs. If it's been a while since your last check-up, or there's something you've been putting off, this is a good time to sort it out. Our consultation fees are on our Fees page.
We're on Oxford Street in the heart of Bulimba, with free onsite parking and lift access, and we see patients from across Bulimba, Hawthorne, Balmoral, Morningside, Norman Park and the surrounding Brisbane suburbs.
