WEIGHT LOSS CONSULTATIONS
Medical Weight Management in Bulimba
Weight is not just about willpower. Hormones, medications, sleep, stress, genetics and underlying medical conditions all play a part, and most people who struggle with their weight have been given plenty of advice but very little proper assessment.
The GPs at Oxford Street Medical Centre Bulimba offer weight management consultations for adults. We start by working out what is actually driving your weight, then build a plan with you that fits your health, your history and your life.
Who this is for
You might benefit from a weight management consultation if:
• You have been trying to lose weight without success
• You have regained weight after previous attempts
• You have a health condition affected by your weight, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver, sleep apnoea, joint pain or polycystic ovary syndrome
• You have a family history of heart disease or diabetes
• Your weight has changed noticeably and you are not sure why
• You want a medical opinion rather than an online program
What happens at your first appointment
Your GP will take a proper history and assess your overall health before recommending anything. This usually includes:
• Your weight history, previous attempts and what has and has not worked
• Current medications, including any that can contribute to weight gain
• Eating patterns, activity, sleep and stress
• Mental health and your relationship with food
• Height, weight, waist measurement and blood pressure
• Blood tests where clinically indicated, which may include thyroid function, blood glucose or HbA1c, cholesterol, liver function and iron studies
• Screening for related conditions such as sleep apnoea and fatty liver
Your management plan
There is no single approach that works for everyone. Depending on what your assessment shows, your plan may include:
• Nutrition and dietary strategies, with referral to a dietitian where appropriate
• Physical activity advice suited to your fitness and any injuries
• Sleep and stress management
• Treatment of underlying conditions contributing to weight gain
• Review of existing medications
• Prescription medicine where it is clinically appropriate, after a full discussion of the benefits, risks, costs and monitoring involved
• Referral to specialist or surgical services where indicated
• Psychological support through our onsite clinical psychologists
• Regular review appointments to track progress and adjust the plan
About medication
Some patients ask about medicines used in weight management. Whether any medicine is suitable for you depends on your medical history, your other conditions and your individual risk factors. This is a decision to make with your doctor in a consultation, not something we can advise on by phone or email.
Australian law does not allow us to name or promote prescription medicines on a website. Your GP will discuss all appropriate options with you, including how they work, what they cost, the possible side effects and how you would be monitored.
Medicine is only ever one part of the picture. We do not prescribe without assessment and ongoing review.
Our approach
We are a general practice, not a weight loss company. That means:
• You see the same doctor over time and they know your full medical history
• We look for and treat the causes, not just the number on the scales
• We are honest about what is realistic and what is not
• Your care continues whether or not you are on any particular treatment
